Symptoms

While some women diagnosed with adenomyosis may have few or no symptoms, the disease can present in the following ways:

  • Heavy, prolonged menstrual bleeding - bleeding that can last up to 14 days plus

  • Severe menstrual cramps - vaginal pressure can be severe enough to feel like the uterus is trying to push out through the vagina (like the last stage of labour when the baby's head pushes into the cervix)

  • Large blood clots

  • Sudden stabbing pains across abdomen at any time during cycle

  • Sudden and unexpected vaginal discharge

  • Abdominal pressure and bloating - feeling full up after eating only a small meal due to pressure on stomach

  • Severe nausea - particularly prior to menstruation

  • Acid reflux - from pressure upwards from the diaphragm

  • Enlarged Uterus - noticeable in most severe cases with the appearance of a 3-9 months plus pregnancy

  • Tilted uterus – associated pain in small of back

  • Pain/lack of sensation during intercourse

  • Painful orgasm and associated lengthy cramping and spotting

  • Sharp internal vaginal/cervical pain on sitting down

  • Pain radiating down one or both thighs/legs

  • Constipation
    } changeable/unpredictable bowel behaviour

  • Diarrhea

  • Rectal pain

  • Joint pain on resting and muscle cramps

  • Frequent urination - worsens as condition becomes severe

  • Lower Back ache - within the lower lumbar region

  • Severe Migraines - usually just before or as period begins

  • Iron Deficiency Anaemia - in latter stages of condition

  • Associated vitamin deficiencies – particularly Vitamin D

  • Hormonal imbalances – very high levels of estrogen

  • Palpitations
    }- associated with anaemia

  • Breathlessness

  • Extreme fatigue - needing to sleep during the day

  • Rapid weight gain - in latter stages of condition

  • Pressure on the spine leading to muscle weakness

  • Water retention/oedema - noticeable in face, legs, hands, ankles

  • Incontinence and/or lack of ability to empty bladder

  • Hair loss - sudden hair thinning

  • Mood swings - as with PMS

  • Symptoms worsen with stress

  • Insomnia - due to pain interfering with sleep

  • Infertility - failure to conceive with IVF intervention

  • Miscarriage - multiple miscarriage/complications
